Sleep can be difficult for those on the road. Different hotel rooms have different noises and light sleepers may struggle with the constant changes. Sleep deprivation can have a cumulative negative effect on your job performance and mental health. A trick that I used many times to great effect is the ‘white noise’ method whereby you recreate a specific steady noise every night in your hotel room. Your subconscious gets used to that noise and blots out the strange bumps and creaks encountered in different hotel rooms that would otherwise wake you up. There are white noise sleep programs you can download onto your laptop or phone. Ocean wave noises can be looped. Specially designed static noises or other sounds can be used. This is handy when normal sleep patterns are disrupted by changing time zones. I had a white noise program on my smartphone. I used a small travel speaker in my hotel room and headphones to sleep on planes. There are also NLP or self-hypnosis relaxation-type sounds you can loop while you sleep. Task your subconscious into dealing with your work-induced stress issues while you slumber!
